Trump Threatens to Seize Iran’s Oil Assets, Signals Possible Move on Kharg Island
Trump VS Iran
US President Donald Trump has hinted at taking control of Iran’s key oil export hub, Kharg Island, intensifying fears of a wider Middle East conflict. Iran has warned of retaliation as crude prices surge sharply worldwide.

Washington/Tehran | March 31, 2026: Tensions in the Middle East escalated further after US President Donald Trump openly suggested that the United States could take control of Iran’s oil assets, including the strategically crucial Kharg Island, a key export terminal that supports Iran’s economy. In an interview, Trump stated that Kharg Island, considered the backbone of Iran’s oil exports, was among the options available to Washington. “We can take it or we may not. We have many options,” he said, triggering fresh concern over the possibility of direct American military action against Iranian energy infrastructure.
The statement comes as the conflict in the region enters its fifth week, with reports indicating a sharp rise in US military activity. American forces have reportedly deployed additional troops to the region, with around 3,500 soldiers reaching the area aboard the USS Tripoli. Preparations are also underway to send the 82nd Airborne Division, further strengthening the US presence. Iran responded with a strong warning. Speaker of Iran’s Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf cautioned that any US action against Iranian territory would be met with attacks on key American infrastructure. He also issued a direct threat, stating that US forces would be “burned” if they launched an assault.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are continuing, with leaders from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey holding talks in Islamabad in an attempt to reduce tensions and prevent the conflict from spreading. Despite these efforts, global oil markets remain on edge. Brent crude prices have reportedly climbed to around $116 per barrel, raising fears of renewed inflationary pressure worldwide. Iran’s Health Ministry claimed the death toll in the ongoing conflict has reached 2,076, including 216 children, highlighting the growing humanitarian crisis.

Trump has also claimed that the conflict has led to a “regime change” in Iran, stating that several Iranian leaders were killed in recent weeks and that Washington may now be dealing with “more rational leadership.” He added that a possible agreement with Iran could be reached as early as next week. With the situation worsening, analysts warn that any escalation around Iran’s oil export routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, could severely disrupt global energy supplies and deepen the economic fallout.
