Two Killed as Truck Rams Trailer Near Urse on Pune–Mumbai Expressway
A truck collided with a trailer near Urse toll plaza early Saturday, killing the trailer driver and a cleaner from the other truck. Investigation points to possible driver fatigue; police have registered a negligence case.
Pune| December 01, 2025: In a tragic early-morning accident near the Urse toll plaza on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway, a truck rammed into the rear of a trailer truck around 4 AM on Saturday, resulting in the death of two heavy-vehicle workers.
The deceased have been identified as 30-year-old trailer driver Pawan Upadhyay from Uttar Pradesh, who died on the spot after metal cargo shifted violently into the cabin following the impact, and 24-year-old cleaner Sarasandhiran Govindswami from Tamil Nadu, who succumbed to injuries later in hospital after being struck by shifting load from the accident.
The driver of the rear truck, Rajesh Govindan, sustained minor injuries. Police say preliminary investigation points to driver fatigue or possible dozing off at the wheel — likely cause of the crash. He has been booked under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing death by negligence.
Authorities recovered the shifting metal load from both vehicles and are investigating cargo-loading norms, speed, and driver logs to establish liability. The trailer’s owner has been traced; he is expected to reach Pune within two days for questioning. Until then, the expressway segment near Urse toll plaza remains under intensified scrutiny by highway police, who have warned drivers to maintain proper following distance and ensure rest breaks, especially for heavy vehicles.
The accident raises serious concerns about truck-trailer safety standards and driver working conditions on one of India’s busiest highways. Citizens and transport unions alike are urging stricter regulation and enforcement to prevent similar tragedies.
