Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has called for strict action against fraudulent godmen in Maharashtra, demanding a thorough probe into assets and harsh punishment in serious cases like Nashik’s Ashok Kharat

Pune | 23 March, 2026: Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale has demanded stringent action against self-proclaimed godmen operating across Maharashtra, citing the recent case involving Nashik-based Ashok Kharat.

Addressing a press conference in Pune, Athawale said that considering the gravity of allegations against Kharat, the accused should face the harshest punishment. He urged the government to conduct a detailed investigation into the source of Kharat’s assets and ensure strict legal action against all those found guilty.

Highlighting broader concerns, Athawale stressed that similar action must be taken against all fraudulent spiritual leaders in the state to curb exploitation and protect citizens.

Speaking about party expansion, he stated that the Republican Party of India aims to strengthen its presence across communities, including marginalized sections, youth, and women. He added that efforts are underway to secure national party status by expanding into states such as Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, with plans to contest upcoming assembly elections.
