Unseasonal Rain Alert in Maharashtra: Yellow Warning Issued for 24 Districts, Thunderstorms Likely
Maharashtra
IMD issues yellow alert for 24 districts in Maharashtra on March 18 with thunderstorms, gusty winds, and rain forecast.
Pune | 18 March, 2026: A sudden shift in weather patterns has prompted the India Meteorological Department to issue a yellow alert across 24 districts in Maharashtra for March 18, warning of unseasonal rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. The advisory comes after a spell of rising temperatures earlier this month, indicating a sharp transition to unstable atmospheric conditions across multiple regions.
According to meteorological forecasts, several parts of the state-including western Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha—are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and winds reaching speeds of 30 to 50 km/h. Pune, along with districts like Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, and Ahilyanagar, is expected to witness thunderstorm activity, particularly on March 18 and 19.

The yellow alert indicates the possibility of localized disruptions, urging citizens to remain cautious. Weather officials have warned that lightning strikes, falling tree branches, and temporary power outages could occur during intense thunderstorm spells. In some regions, especially parts of Vidarbha, there is also a possibility of hailstorms, which could further intensify the impact.
The unseasonal rain is likely to have a significant impact on agriculture, particularly as farmers in many parts of the state are currently harvesting rabi crops. Authorities have advised farmers to take precautionary measures, including safely storing harvested produce and avoiding fieldwork during storm activity.
Experts attribute the sudden weather change to atmospheric instability caused by a western disturbance and moisture incursion, leading to cloud formation and convective activity over the region. Such weather patterns, though not uncommon during seasonal transitions, have become increasingly erratic in recent years, raising concerns about climate variability.
Urban areas could also face short-term disruptions due to waterlogging, traffic congestion, and reduced visibility during heavy showers. Civic authorities are expected to remain on alert, particularly in cities like Pune and Mumbai, where sudden rainfall can impact daily commuting.
Residents have been advised to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms, stay away from tall trees and electric poles, and secure loose outdoor objects. The IMD has also recommended unplugging electronic devices during lightning activity and staying indoors wherever possible.
The weather system is expected to remain active until March 20, after which conditions are likely to stabilize, bringing back dry weather across most parts of the state.
