Kolhapur’s Panchganga river is being polluted by untreated sewage flowing through Jayanti Nala despite treatment projects, raising serious environmental and public health concerns

Kolhapur | February 14, 2026: Kolhapur’s iconic Panchganga River is facing a growing pollution crisis as untreated, contaminated sewage continues to enter the river via the Jayanti Nala drain, environmental observers and local residents have reported.

Despite efforts and investment in sewage treatment infrastructure by the municipal corporation, raw and inadequately treated wastewater is finding its way into the river. Sewage mixed with household and commercial waste flows unabated through the Jayanti Nala conduit, undermining water quality and threatening aquatic ecosystems.

Municipal authorities have established sewage treatment plants to manage wastewater, and studies suggest that a significant portion of sewage is technically processed. However, recent technical assessments indicate that a notable fraction of wastewater still bypasses treatment and is discharged into the river.

Residents and environmental activists have expressed alarm over the deteriorating conditions, warning that persistent pollution could lead to broader ecological and health problems. Untreated sewage entering a major river not only harms aquatic life but can also affect communities that depend on the river for daily needs.

Environmental experts urge stricter enforcement of sewage management protocols and expanded wastewater infrastructure to address gaps in treatment coverage. They also emphasize the need to prevent untreated discharge from local drains and tributaries into the main river channel.

As pollution concerns grow, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and municipal officials are being called upon to implement more robust monitoring and corrective measures to protect the Panchganga river a vital water resource for Kolhapur and surrounding communities.
