Uttarakhand CM Dhami Urges Digitisation and Promotion of Local Languages, Calls Books Irreplaceable

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has launched a cultural preservation drive: digitising folk dialects, literature, and songs, and encouraging Garhwali, Kumaoni, and Jaunsari content through books and local media.

Dehradun| 25 November 2025: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has emphasized the urgent need to preserve the state’s linguistic and cultural heritage. Speaking at a meeting of the Uttarakhand Bhasha Sansthan, Dhami called for a large-scale digitisation effort targeting local dialects, folk tales, songs, and literature.

As part of the plan, Dhami proposed creating an e‑library to archive the region’s oral and written traditions. He also suggested producing audio‑visual media based on folk stories, mapping the state’s dialects linguistically, and organising a festival to celebrate Uttarakhand’s languages and literary traditions.

To engage younger generations, weekly competitions in schools such as speeches or essays in local tongues  would be held. Dhami also urged mobile libraries to reach remote areas, and he encouraged authors and youth to produce creative content in Garhwali, Kumaoni, Jaunsari, and other regional languages.

In a separate address on the release of a political history book, Dhami warned against the over-reliance on AI. “No matter how advanced AI becomes, it cannot replace books,” he said, stressing that printed literature remains vital for preserving cultural memory

He appealed to people to gift books instead of bouquets during events a symbolic gesture showing respect for learning and heritage. Dhami linked this to identity: “Language, culture and customs are not just modes of expression; they are the foundation of our identity and heritage.

With these initiatives, the state government aims to safeguard its rich cultural legacy for future generations and prevent local languages from fading away in a rapidly changing world.
