Mumbai | 29 March, 2026: The much-anticipated ‘Vanrani’ mini train service at Sanjay Gandhi National Park has been temporarily suspended following a technical malfunction, barely 12 days after its grand inauguration. The sudden halt has led to widespread dissatisfaction among visitors, many of whom had flocked to the park specifically to تجربه the revived attraction.

The toy train, which was relaunched on March 14 with considerable fanfare, was seen as a major step toward enhancing tourism within the park. The initiative had been actively supported by Union Minister and Member of Parliament Piyush Goyal, who played a key role in conceptualising a modernised version of the service after it remained बंद for nearly five years due to damage caused by heavy rainfall.
However, the service encountered technical difficulties on March 23 during a routine safari run. Officials identified issues related to the train’s and track compatibility, prompting immediate suspension of operations to avoid any safety risks. The development has raised concerns among tourists, many of whom expressed frustration over the short-lived revival of the attraction.

According to forest department authorities, multiple corrective measures are currently underway. The engine was found to have insufficient power capacity, leading to the ongoing installation of two additional power motors to improve performance. Additionally, a comprehensive technical inspection of the entire track has been carried out, followed by necessary repairs and levelling to ensure smoother .
Mechanical components of the train are also being thoroughly examined, with defective parts either repaired or replaced. Officials further stated that instructions have been issued to the operating company to strengthen routine maintenance systems and ensure stricter protocols to prevent similar issues in the future.
The toy train had been procured from Gujarat and was introduced as a modern attraction aimed at boosting eco-tourism. Its abrupt shutdown has not only disappointed visitors but also raised questions about the quality of execution and preparedness prior to launch. Critics have pointed out that better परीक्षण could have prevented such early-stage failures.
Forest officials confirmed that the issue was promptly communicated by local authorities to technical experts and representatives of the manufacturing company, who have since been working on resolving the faults. The administration has assured the public that efforts are being made on a priority basis to restore the service at the earliest.

In response to the situation, a high-level has been scheduled under the chairmanship of the Conservator and Director of Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivali. The meeting aims to review the समस्या in detail and implement long-term solutions to ensure uninterrupted service going forward.
Despite the setback, officials remain hopeful that the revamped ‘Vanrani’ will soon return to operation with improved efficiency and safety standards. Until then, the incident stands as a reminder of the importance of rigorous testing and maintenance in public infrastructure projects.
