Vasubaras (Govatsa Dwadashi) is being observed on October 17, 2025, with cow worship, puja, and rituals. Devotees hope the tradition brings blessings, prosperity, and a pious start to Diwali.

Mumbai, October 17, 2025: Today marks Vasubaras 2025, also known as Govatsa Dwadashi, a festival in Maharashtra where devotees worship cows and calves to seek blessings before Diwali. This year, the Dwadashi tithi begins at 11:12 AM and continues until 12:18 PM the next day.

The ritual is deeply symbolic: the cow is revered as a mother figure in Hindu tradition, and offerings of food, water, and decorations are made. In many households, the cow is bathed, adorned, and gently worshipped. Some devotees who don’t own cows may visit nearby gaushalas (cow shelters) to perform the ritual.

The significance lies in expressing gratitude to the cow for its nurturing role — providing milk and sustenance — and invoking its blessings for prosperity and harmony in the household. For many, it is also a reminder of the sanctity of life and nature.
Traditional practices often include singing hymns, ringing bells, and performing evening aarti. Followers offer wheat, jaggery, and flowers to the cow.

While some see these customs as primarily symbolic in the modern era, others maintain the traditions with devotion. Many believe that following these rituals strengthens cultural identity and spiritual connection. As Diwali celebrations ramp up, Vasubaras serves as the sacred opening to a festival period rooted in faith and community.
