WhatsApp Tests 15-Minute Auto-Delete Feature to Strengthen User Privacy
WhatsApp is developing a new feature that automatically deletes messages within 15 minutes after being read, aiming to enhance user privacy and provide greater control over sensitive conversations.
March 23 | San Francisco WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new privacy-focused feature that could significantly change how users manage their conversations. The messaging platform is testing an “After Reading” option that automatically deletes messages within 15 minutes after they have been viewed by the recipient. The proposed feature is designed to offer users more control over sensitive or time-bound communications, going beyond the platform’s existing disappearing messages functionality. Unlike current options that allow messages to vanish after a set duration such as 24 hours or seven days, the new system focuses on immediate deletion shortly after a message is read.
According to reports, even if read receipts are turned off, the feature will still function effectively, ensuring that messages are removed based on internal tracking once opened. Additionally, unread messages will reportedly be deleted automatically after a fixed period, likely around 24 hours, preventing old or unnoticed messages from lingering in chats. The move comes amid growing global concerns around digital privacy and data security. Messaging platforms are increasingly introducing features that limit the lifespan of messages, aiming to reduce risks associated with data misuse, unauthorized access, or accidental sharing.
As competition intensifies among messaging services, privacy enhancements have become a key differentiator. WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms, has been steadily expanding its suite of privacy tools, including chat locks, disappearing messages, and encrypted backups. While the feature is currently under development and being tested in beta versions, there is no official confirmation yet on when it will be rolled out to all users.
