A 42‑year‑old woman died suddenly at a sickle cell screening camp in Chikhaldara’s Melghat region, highlighting growing concerns as cases rise in the tribal area.
Chikhaldara| February 07, 2026: A 42‑year‑old resident of Chikhli village tragically passed away during a rural health camp organized for sickle cell patients at the Chikhaldara Rural Hospital on Friday, triggering alarm about the increasing incidence of the genetic blood disorder in the region.

The deceased, identified as Draupadi Suresh Patorkar, arrived at the camp for treatment, but collapsed and suffered severe blood vomiting soon after reaching the venue, and was declared dead on the spot, according to local reports.
The health department’s initiative in the Melghat area aims to screen and assist individuals affected by sickle cell disease, a hereditary condition that causes abnormal hemoglobin and can lead to severe complications if undiagnosed or untreated. Community health workers and authorities have noted a consistent increase in cases within tribal populations of the Nagpur division.

Sickle cell disease remains a significant public health concern across rural Maharashtra, where awareness and early detection efforts are being scaled up. Recent campaigns in nearby districts, such as Nashik’s ‘Arunodaya’ screening drive, have involved widespread testing and education to curb the disease’s impact and prevent future severe outcomes.Health experts emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and continuous care to reduce mortality and improve quality of life for those living with the disorder, an approach supported by national research showing that prompt treatment can dramatically lower death rates from sickle cell anemia.
The tragic incident at Chikhaldara serves as a stark reminder of the urgency to strengthen medical services, awareness campaigns, and regular monitoring in high‑risk areas to prevent such fatalities in the future.
