Pune | 24 March, 2026: In a major crackdown, police in Pimpri-Chinchwad have arrested a six-member all-women gang involved in a series of jewellery thefts targeting passengers on public buses. The arrests have exposed a well-organized pickpocket network that operated across multiple routes in and around Pune, raising serious concerns about commuter safety. According to investigators, the gang had been active for several weeks, specifically targeting vulnerable passengers such as elderly women and solo travellers who were seen wearing visible gold ornaments.

Police officials revealed that the gang used a highly coordinated and deceptive modus operandi to carry out the thefts. Typically, one member would initiate conversation with the victim to gain trust, while another would sit close to create physical proximity. In a particularly clever tactic, one of the women would pretend to breastfeed a child, effectively blocking the victim’s view and creating a distraction. During this moment, other members of the group would swiftly remove jewellery such as gold chains or earrings without alerting the victim. The use of a child as a prop helped the group appear harmless and reduced suspicion among fellow passengers.

The gang ensured quick escapes after executing their plan. They would deboard at the next bus stop immediately after the theft and flee using autorickshaws or other passing vehicles. Their constant movement across different routes made it difficult for victims to track them or for authorities to identify a pattern initially. However, after receiving multiple complaints from different parts of the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, police launched a detailed investigation by analyzing CCTV footage from bus stops and surrounding areas. By tracking repeated appearances and movements, officials were able to identify the suspects and eventually apprehend them near the outskirts of the city. During the arrest operation, stolen jewellery worth approximately ₹90,000 was recovered.

A senior police officer involved in the case stated that the gang operated with precision and coordination, making it challenging to catch them without technological support. The successful arrests highlight the growing importance of surveillance systems in solving urban crimes. However, the incident has also raised broader concerns about safety in public transportation systems, especially in rapidly growing urban regions like Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, where overcrowded buses create opportunities for such organized thefts.
