Pune | 24 March, 2026: In a serious breach of security protocols, a 20-year-old Youth has been booked by police for allegedly flying a drone without permission in a highly sensitive defence area in Pune. The incident occurred in the Dighi locality, which houses restricted military establishments, prompting swift action from authorities over concerns of national and public safety.

According to police officials, theYouth entered the restricted “Magazine Guard” zone in Dighi on the evening of March 21 and operated a drone without obtaining the mandatory permissions. The area is classified as a high-security zone due to the presence of defence infrastructure, where any form of aerial activity is strictly regulated. Reports indicate that the Youth allegedly tampered with boundary fencing to gain access to the premises, further escalating the seriousness of the offence.

The incident came to light when a security personnel on duty noticed suspicious drone activity within the premises and immediately intervened. A complaint was subsequently filed by a 52-year-old staff member of the Defence Security Corps (DSC), following which a case was registered at the local police station.

Police have booked the accused under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to criminal trespass, disobedience of lawful orders, and acts endangering life or public safety. Officials stated that flying drones in restricted defence zones can pose significant risks, including surveillance threats and potential misuse by anti-national elements.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the Youth had purchased the drone for recreational purposes and was allegedly unaware that the area was classified as a “red zone.” However, authorities emphasized that ignorance of the law does not excuse such violations, especially in sensitive zones where strict compliance is mandatory. After initial questioning, the Youth was released on notice, and further investigation is ongoing.

This incident comes amid heightened security awareness regarding drone usage across urban centres. In recent years, authorities in Pune and other cities have imposed strict guidelines on drone operations, particularly near military bases, government installations, and during high-profile events. For instance, temporary “no-fly zones” are often declared during VIP visits or security alerts to prevent unauthorized aerial surveillance.
