Maharashtra government secures ₹6,000 crore loan to accelerate land acquisition for the Purandar International Airport project near Pune.
Pune | 24 February, 2026- In a major boost to infrastructure development in Maharashtra, the state government has sanctioned a ₹6,000 crore loan to fast-track land acquisition for the proposed Purandar International Airport near Pune. The funding is aimed at acquiring nearly 3,000 acres of land required for the ambitious greenfield airport project, which is expected to significantly enhance regional and international air connectivity.

Officials stated that the financial approval will accelerate compensation payments to landowners and streamline the remaining land acquisition process in villages identified within Purandar taluka. The project, which has faced delays in the past due to land procurement challenges, is now expected to gain momentum with dedicated funding support. Authorities have indicated that a large portion of affected landowners have already given consent, while discussions continue with others to ensure fair compensation and rehabilitation measures.
To manage the financial and operational aspects of the project, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) has been constituted involving key state development agencies. This structure is designed to ensure transparent fund utilisation and coordinated implementation. Loan repayment responsibilities will be distributed among participating agencies based on predefined equity shares, ensuring financial accountability and long-term sustainability of the project.
The proposed airport is envisioned as a major aviation hub that will ease congestion at Pune’s existing airport and cater to growing passenger and cargo traffic. Once operational, the facility is expected to boost economic activity across multiple sectors, including tourism, information technology, manufacturing, and trade. Improved air connectivity is also likely to attract greater domestic and foreign investment into the region.

The Purandar airport project has been part of Maharashtra’s long-term infrastructure roadmap for several years. Authorities believe the new funding milestone marks a turning point in overcoming previous bottlenecks. Government representatives have emphasised their commitment to completing the land acquisition process in a transparent and time-bound manner, while ensuring adequate safeguards for affected communities.
The loan sanction also sends a strong signal to investors and infrastructure stakeholders about the state’s commitment to large-scale development initiatives. As procedural clearances, environmental approvals, and construction planning move forward, the focus will now shift to timely execution and phased development aligned with aviation demand projections.

Local residents and industry observers are closely watching the next steps, particularly regarding compensation distribution and rehabilitation plans. Effective coordination between administrative bodies and project agencies will be crucial to maintaining momentum and preventing further delays.
