March 17, 2026 | Mumbai: In a significant step towards environmental restoration, the Maharashtra government has sanctioned ₹525 crore for the purification of the Indrayani River under the AMRUT scheme. The announcement was made by state minister Uday Samant in the Legislative Council, highlighting the importance of the river for both local residents and the Warkari community.

The project will be jointly funded, with 25 percent contribution each from the central and state governments, and 50 percent from municipal corporations. The funds will be utilised for river cleaning, sewage treatment infrastructure, and pollution control measures aimed at preventing untreated wastewater from entering the river. Concerns over rising pollution levels were raised during the session, with legislators pointing out that several industrial units are not operating effluent treatment plants at full capacity. In some cases, these facilities are reportedly shut during evenings, leading to untreated discharge into the river. Authorities have been directed to ensure strict compliance and continuous monitoring of such units.

The government also confirmed that similar measures will be undertaken for the Pavana River, with coordinated efforts involving local representatives and administrative bodies. Separately, the state has approved ₹59.75 crore for the expansion and repair of the Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur road, a key industrial and transport corridor. The project is expected to be completed by December 2026, improving connectivity across major industrial zones in the Pune region.
