New Delhi |October 30, 2025: Justice Surya Kant has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) and will take oath on November 24, 2025, following the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice B.R. Gavai. The official notification confirming his appointment was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice after receiving approval from the President of India.
Justice Kant, who is currently a senior judge of the Supreme Court, will be the 53rd Chief Justice of India. He is expected to serve until February 9, 2027. His appointment follows the long-standing convention of elevating the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court to the top judicial post.
Born on February 10, 1962, Justice Surya Kant began his judicial career as an advocate at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He was elevated as a judge in 2001 and later served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court before being appointed to the Supreme Court in 2019.

Throughout his career, Justice Kant has been known for his balanced judgments, administrative efficiency, and emphasis on access to justice. His elevation comes at a crucial time when several significant constitutional matters, including issues related to electoral reforms, data privacy, and judicial transparency, are pending before the Supreme Court.
Legal experts believe his leadership could shape the judiciary’s direction over the next two years, reinforcing judicial independence and accountability.
