A suspected leopard sighting at SPPU has raised concern among students and staff. The university advised avoiding outdoor movement after dark and sought Forest Department assistance for verification and safety.
Pune | 26 November 2025: Rumours of a leopard sighting inside the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) campus created unease on Wednesday evening, prompting the administration to issue immediate precautionary instructions. Although the sighting has not been officially confirmed, the alert has unsettled students, faculty, and hostel residents who often move across the wooded campus after dark.

The university has advised everyone on campus to avoid stepping outdoors after sunset and before sunrise. Students living in hostels and research scholars working late hours have been specifically told to minimise movement in isolated areas. Security officials said these measures are temporary until more clarity is obtained.

SPPU’s security department has contacted the Forest Department and requested an on-ground inspection. This may include checking CCTV footage, conducting night patrolling, and placing camera traps in dense green zones. Authorities said that residents should remain alert but avoid spreading unverified messages on social media.
The university’s large green cover and proximity to natural habitats have led to occasional wildlife movement in the past. However, the timing of this rumour, coming during the exam period, has heightened anxiety among students.

SPPU officials stated that an official confirmation will be issued once the Forest Department completes its assessment. Until then, the administration has urged everyone to follow safety guidelines and report any unusual animal movement to campus security.
