Pune, 27 November 2025: Vadgaon Sheri, once a rapidly developing suburb in Pune’s eastern corridor, is grappling with severe civic issues as municipal services fail to keep pace with its growth. Thousands of residents report chronic water shortages, poor sanitation, and deteriorating infrastructure across neighbourhoods such as Kharadi, Sanjay Park, and surrounding housing societies. Despite water supply being sourced from Bhama Askhed dam and the Cantonment Water Centre, residents say water availability is intermittent, with many homes receiving minimal or no supply for days. In several cases, tankers or privately purchased water have become a necessity for daily chores, adding financial burden on households.
Complicating the water crisis, contamination and poor water quality have been reported repeatedly. Residents allege that illegal diversions of municipal water lines exacerbate scarcity, while maintenance delays, such as cable fires at local pumping stations, further disrupt supply. These lapses highlight systemic inefficiencies in urban water management that demand urgent attention.
Sanitation remains another major concern. Garbage collection is irregular, and drains often remain clogged, leading to accumulation of waste along roadsides. Despite resident-led cleanup efforts, trash reappears rapidly, suggesting structural failures in municipal waste management. During the monsoon season, narrow and damaged roads become waterlogged, further inconveniencing commuters and posing safety risks.
Traffic congestion and public safety issues have compounded daily hardships. Vadgaon Sheri’s roads are narrow, poorly lit, and lack proper footpaths or regulated parking, creating unsafe conditions for children, pedestrians, and night commuters. Residents have repeatedly demanded improvements in road infrastructure, street lighting, and last-mile connectivity, but progress has been slow.
Local civic representatives acknowledge complaints but have struggled to implement lasting solutions. Residents argue that promises made during election cycles remain unfulfilled, leaving urban expansion outpacing municipal services. Experts note that such gaps not only reduce quality of life but also increase health risks due to contaminated water and unsanitary conditions.
Despite challenges, community initiatives have emerged. Residents have organized cleanliness drives, documented civic issues, and demanded accountability from municipal authorities. They call for regular, reliable water supply, proper waste disposal, pothole-free roads, and transparent municipal services that match the needs of a rapidly growing population.
