Contractual employees under Samagra Shiksha warn of an indefinite protest in Nagpur during the winter session, demanding permanent government absorption or permission for voluntary marches after years of low pay and job insecurity.

Nagpur | December 04,2025: Contractual employees working under the Samagra Shiksha Yojana have announced an indefinite state-level protest in Nagpur beginning Monday. They allege that the government’s indifferent policy toward contractual staff has pushed thousands into financial and emotional distress, leaving their professional lives uncertain despite two decades of service.

According to the Samagra Shiksha Sangharsh Samiti, employees have been working in various educational roles for very low remuneration, with no honorarium hike for the past eight years. Many now fear losing their jobs entirely. The service tenure of several workers reportedly ends in the next three to six months, while almost ten percent face termination within four years. They argue that despite continuous service and rising workload, the government has not taken concrete steps to secure their future.

The employees have demanded that the government immediately absorb them into permanent service or allow them to conduct a voluntary march if their demands cannot be met. The agitation will involve symbolic demonstrations such as food begging, blowing conch shells, ringing plates, bells, and talanas, alongside silent protests and self-inflicted demonstrations. Leaders warn that families of employees will join a food-boycott protest from the sixth day if no response is received.

A government study committee was formed earlier to examine the issue of retaining contractual staff, but workers claim it has yielded no results even after one year and five months. They highlight that states like Punjab, Manipur, and Sikkim have already taken steps to regularize similar employees, while Maharashtra has not moved beyond partial retention.

Feeling betrayed, the employees say the government must either secure their positions or acknowledge their desperation. “We are left with no other option. This struggle will continue until justice is served,” said Yogita Balakshe, State President of the Samagra Shiksha Sangharsh Samiti.
