Arun Govil has urged the government to install CCTV cameras in mosques and madrasas for national security, arguing they are public places like temples and churches. He wants a uniform security policy for all religious sites.

New Delhi| December 5, 2025:During the Winter Session of Parliament on Thursday, Meadert MP Arun Govil urged the government to mandate installation of CCTV cameras at mosques and madrasas across India, stressing this isn’t about targeting any religion but ensuring national security and safety for all citizens.

Govil pointed out that in India  much like other countries  CCTV cameras are now common at various public and religious places including temples, churches, gurudwaras, schools, colleges, hospitals, markets and more. However, mosques and madrasas remain exempt from this security infrastructure, which he says is a glaring inconsistency.

Referring to precedents from abroad, Govil noted that even in the holy city of Mecca (in Saudi Arabia), cameras are installed in mosques and madrasas as security measures questioning why similar standards can’t be uniformly applied in India.

He asked the Centre to draft a national security policy that treats all religious and community spaces equally, regardless of religion, saying that safety and security should not discriminate. Emphasizing that CCTV installation has helped ensure transparency, prevent crime, and improve accountability at other public places, Govil said this step would help protect people visiting mosques and madrasas, just like visitors elsewhere.

Govil’s demand comes amid growing calls for uniform security measures across all public gatherings and religious spaces, and raises questions on balancing security imperatives with privacy and religious sensitivities. The proposal now awaits consideration by the central government and parliamentary debate.
