A 63-year-old man in Pune died after being hit by an autorickshaw and later abandoned instead of being taken to the hospital. Baner Police arrested the driver.
Pune, December 08, 2025 – An elderly man in Pune has died in a disturbing incident where the autorickshaw driver who hit him allegedly took him away under the pretense of taking him to a hospital, but instead dumped him by the roadside. The victim, identified as Gopal Govind Wagh, was crossing near Balewadi Phata when the autorickshaw struck him. Several witnesses urged the driver to take him for treatment, and the driver agreed. However, police say he diverted the route and abandoned the injured man at a secluded location near Range Hills.

When Wagh did not return home, his family filed a missing person complaint. The next day, police discovered his body near the area where he was allegedly left. Doctors have indicated that the victim suffered serious head injuries and could have survived had he received timely medical attention.
Officers tracked down the autorickshaw through CCTV footage and eyewitness statements. The driver, originally from Delhi, was arrested and has been charged under sections related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, hit-and-run, and causing the disappearance of evidence. Police say the behaviour of the driver shows clear intent to avoid responsibility and escape legal consequences.
The case has led to strong reactions from residents and safety advocates. Many have expressed shock that an elderly man was left without help despite visible injuries. Social groups in Pune say the case highlights a serious problem with road safety and the need for stronger rules for public transport operators. They have demanded stricter licensing checks and monitoring of autorickshaw drivers, especially those operating on busy stretches like Balewadi and Baner.
Police have stated that action will not stop at arrest alone. They are reviewing whether others were involved or whether the driver received instructions from anyone else. Investigators are also analysing more CCTV clips from nearby roads and intersections to reconstruct the route taken after the collision.
Local authorities are now urging the public to assist accident victims immediately rather than waiting for police or emergency services to arrive. They say any delay can prove fatal, especially for elderly citizens. Officials have also pointed out that many hospitals in Pune are equipped to handle emergencies and that taking victims there should always be the first step.
For now, the accused remains in police custody while investigations continue. The incident has sparked serious concern about accountability and civic sense on city roads, and many believe the case will become a test of how effectively the law deals with negligent and irresponsible behaviour by public transport drivers.
