A Pune police constable has been suspended after an accused in the Baba Siddique murder case escaped following being called for questioning, raising serious concerns of negligence.
Pune, December 09, 2025 – Pune Police have suspended a constable after a key accused in the Baba Siddique murder investigation escaped shortly after being called for questioning. According to officials, the accused was summoned by the Crime Branch, but due to procedural lapses and delays in initiating arrest measures, he managed to flee. Authorities say the act reflects serious negligence, especially considering the sensitivity of the case.
Police sources identified the suspended officer as Sachin Dilip Pawar from Unit-6 of the Pune Crime Branch. He had reportedly called the accused and his associate for inquiry but did not ensure that proper custody arrangements were in place. The accused failed to appear later, and further attempts to trace him showed that he had already absconded. Following an internal review, the constable was placed under immediate suspension.

The Baba Siddique murder case has been high profile from the beginning, involving allegations of conspiracy and organised crime links. Investigators believe the accused who absconded may have connections to a criminal network, which makes the lapse more serious. Police units are now retracing digital and physical trails to locate him and have initiated searches in multiple locations.
Senior officials said the suspension was necessary to underline accountability inside the force. They noted that any delay in arrest approval and failure to secure an accused during questioning can undermine the investigation itself. Further departmental inquiry is expected, and if more officers are found responsible for the lapse, disciplinary action could widen.
This is not the first time the case has exposed gaps in police procedure. Soon after the murder, a separate security officer was suspended for negligence connected to Siddique’s personal protection. That earlier suspension had already raised debate on police preparedness and the need for stricter handling of threats surrounding political figures. The current lapse has revived those concerns.
Legal experts say high-profile criminal cases require extra caution and coordination between units. They point out that every procedural step, from calling an accused for questioning to filing arrest petitions, must follow strict timelines. Any delay can allow suspects to escape, damage evidence and weaken future prosecution.

The incident has also prompted calls for internal audits to examine whether similar lapses have occurred previously. Some analysts argue that technology such as digital tracking of accused, mandatory custody procedures and stricter documentation could prevent such escapes in the future.
For now, police have intensified efforts to locate the missing accused. Additional teams are monitoring contacts, travel patterns and phone records. Authorities have appealed to the public to share information if they spot or identify the suspect.
The Crime Branch maintains that the investigation into the murder will continue without disruption. Officers say public trust is at stake, and disciplinary action is part of ensuring that the case proceeds firmly and transparently.
