Pune | 10 February, 2026: A Pune resident has fallen victim to a ₹11.61 lakh fraud involving a fake Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) tree plantation tender, police reported. The accused, identified as Abhijit Gaikwad, allegedly convinced the victim that he could secure a lucrative civic contract by presenting “official” documents.

The complainant transferred money in multiple instalments over several months, trusting the fabricated claims. According to the FIR filed at Bhosari police station, Gaikwad collected a total of ₹17.49 lakh, of which only ₹5.88 lakh was returned, leaving ₹11.61 lakh in his possession. The accused reportedly forged documents to make the tender approval appear genuine.

The fraud came to light when the victim tried to follow up on the tender, discovering that no such contract existed. Repeated demands for the remaining amount went unanswered, prompting the complaint to law enforcement authorities.Police have registered the case under relevant sections of the law pertaining to cheating and forgery. Investigators are working to identify any accomplices and recover the defrauded sum. The case underscores the increasing use of fake tenders to target unsuspecting individuals and small businesses.

Authorities have warned citizens to verify all documents linked to official tenders and exercise caution before making payments. They emphasized confirming details directly with PCMC to avoid falling prey to similar scams.

This incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in fraudulent civic contracts and the importance of legal vigilance.
