Fresh tensions have surfaced in the Karnataka Congress over the alleged power-sharing formula, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar signalling impatience as speculation grows over a possible leadership change
Bengaluru | 6 March, 2026: The ruling Congress government in Karnataka is witnessing renewed internal tensions as the debate over a reported power-sharing arrangement between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has resurfaced. Political discussions in the state have intensified after Shivakumar hinted that a decision regarding the leadership issue could soon emerge.

The leadership tussle dates back to the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections when the Congress returned to power with a strong majority. At that time, Siddaramaiah was chosen as chief minister while Shivakumar, who also serves as the state Congress president, was appointed deputy chief minister. Reports had suggested a possible rotational chief minister formula, under which Shivakumar might take over the top post after two and a half years.

However, the issue remains unresolved and continues to trigger speculation within the party. Shivakumar’s supporters have repeatedly raised the matter, arguing that the agreement should be honoured. Some leaders believe the delay in implementing the arrangement has created dissatisfaction among sections of the party’s state leadership.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, on the other hand, has publicly attempted to downplay the tensions and maintain that relations between the two leaders remain cordial. He has emphasised party unity and dismissed claims of a serious rift within the state leadership.Meanwhile, the Congress high command in New Delhi is closely monitoring the situation. Senior party leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi are reportedly involved in consultations aimed at preventing the issue from escalating further and ensuring stability in the state government.

Political observers believe the outcome of the leadership debate could significantly influence the Congress party’s internal dynamics in Karnataka, especially as the government approaches the midpoint of its five-year term.
