The Maharashtra government announced major initiatives including farm loan waivers, rural road development, electricity bill relief and startup promotion, aiming for inclusive growth and progress toward a $1 trillion state economy.

Mumbai |07 March, 2026: The Maharashtra government on Friday unveiled a comprehensive state budget focused on farmer welfare, rural infrastructure and economic expansion, outlining a roadmap aimed at transforming the state into a $1 trillion economy in the coming years.

Presenting the budget, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced several key measures designed to support agriculture, boost entrepreneurship and strengthen development across urban and rural regions. The budget emphasises four guiding pillars—progressive growth, sustainability, inclusivity and good governance. One of the major announcements includes a farm loan waiver of up to ₹2 lakh for eligible farmers, providing relief to thousands of cultivators facing financial stress. In addition, farmers who regularly repay their loans will receive an incentive of ₹50,000 to encourage financial discipline and support agricultural stability.

The government also proposed a major electricity bill waiver scheme for farmers, allocating nearly ₹20,000 crore under the initiative. Officials noted that over the past eight years, electricity-related relief measures worth nearly ₹44,000 crore have been extended to farmers across the state.

The budget also highlights Maharashtra’s growing leadership in the startup ecosystem. Officials stated that the state currently ranks first in India in terms of startups and unicorn companies, reflecting strong innovation and entrepreneurship. Despite an estimated revenue deficit of around ₹40,000 crore, the government said significant allocations have been made for welfare schemes, including continued funding for the state’s flagship women-centric initiatives.
