8-Lane Elevated Corridor from Nashik Phata to Khed Planned to Ease Pune Traffic Congestion
A major 8-lane elevated corridor between Nashik Phata and Khed is in the pipeline to decongest the Pune-Nashik highway, promising faster connectivity and relief for commuters and industries.
Pune | 29 March, 2026: In a significant boost to regional infrastructure, an ambitious 8-lane elevated corridor has been proposed between Nashik Phata and Khed to tackle persistent traffic congestion on the busy Pune-Nashik highway. The project, being developed by the National Highways Authority of India, is expected to transform connectivity across key industrial and residential zones.
The proposed corridor will span approximately 28 to 30 kilometres and is estimated to cost around ₹7,827 crore. Designed as a high-capacity elevated roadway, it will run above the existing highway, allowing smoother and uninterrupted movement of vehicles while reducing pressure on the current surface road.

The stretch between Nashik Phata and Rajgurunagar (Khed) is one of the most congested corridors in the Pune Metropolitan Region, particularly due to heavy industrial traffic from areas like Chakan and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Officials believe the new elevated road will significantly reduce travel time and improve logistics efficiency for industries operating in this belt.
The project has already attracted interest from major infrastructure companies, with the technical bidding process currently underway. Authorities are also fast-tracking land acquisition and clearances to ensure timely execution. Once completed, the corridor is expected to serve as a vital link connecting Pune’s urban zones with northern regions, easing both commuter and freight movement.
In addition to the elevated structure, plans include widening the existing highway and developing service roads to manage local traffic effectively. This dual-layer approach aims to segregate long-distance and local traffic, thereby enhancing overall road safety and efficiency.

Infrastructure experts highlight that such elevated corridors are becoming essential in rapidly growing urban regions like Pune, where traditional road expansion is often constrained by space limitations. By utilising vertical space, the project offers a sustainable solution to increasing vehicular load.
The development is part of a broader push to modernise Maharashtra’s transport network, with several high-value road projects being planned to support economic growth and urban mobility. The Nashik Phata–Khed corridor, in particular, is seen as critical for supporting the Chakan industrial hub, which houses major automobile and manufacturing units.

While the project promises significant benefits, challenges such as land acquisition, environmental clearances, and execution timelines remain key factors that will determine its progress. Authorities, however, have expressed confidence that with coordinated efforts, the corridor can be completed within the targeted timeframe.
Once operational, the elevated corridor is expected to drastically reduce congestion, cut travel time, and improve the overall commuting experience for thousands of daily travellers in and around Pune.
