April 13 | Pune In response to the ongoing LPG shortage, the Maharashtra government has resumed the distribution of kerosene through the Public Distribution System (PDS), offering relief to households struggling with cooking fuel access. However, in Pune district, the limited availability of kerosene has raised concerns over equitable distribution and access. As per the allocation, Pune district has received a significantly lower supply compared to demand, forcing authorities to restrict distribution primarily to rural areas. Urban municipal regions have largely been excluded from the scheme, with priority being given to Antyodaya and Priority Household ration card holders.

Officials have fixed the retail price of kerosene at around ₹60-₹65 per litre, making it a relatively affordable alternative for low-income families affected by rising LPG costs and delayed cylinder availability. The state government had earlier approved a temporary allocation of over 37 lakh litres of kerosene across Maharashtra, with Pune rural receiving a share of approximately 2.04 lakh litres. The move is aimed at easing the burden on households amid fuel supply disruptions caused by global geopolitical tensions and rising demand.

Despite this, the gap between demand and supply remains a major challenge. Authorities have introduced a quota-based distribution system at the taluka level to ensure fair allocation among beneficiaries. Each eligible household is expected to receive a limited quantity, typically around 2 to 3 litres per ration card. Experts warn that unless additional stock is allocated, many families may continue to face difficulties. The situation has also highlighted the state’s renewed dependence on kerosene as a backup fuel, despite earlier efforts to phase it out in favor of cleaner alternatives. With distribution underway, the administration is focusing on monitoring supply chains closely to prevent black marketing and ensure that the benefits reach the intended sections of society.
