April 13 | Pune : In a significant move aimed at improving public transport safety, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is planning to install CCTV cameras on bus dashboards to monitor driver behaviour and reduce rising accident cases. The decision comes amid growing concerns over frequent mishaps involving PMPML buses across the city. According to available data, PMPML buses have been involved in several accidents in recent years, highlighting the need for stricter monitoring and accountability. Reports indicate that multiple fatal incidents have occurred due to negligence and road safety violations, raising concerns among commuters and authorities alike.

To address these issues, PMPML is introducing a system where cameras will be installed not only inside buses but also directly on dashboards, focusing on the driver’s actions. These cameras will record real-time footage, helping authorities track whether drivers are following rules or engaging in unsafe practices such as distracted driving The initiative is part of a broader plan to modernize the city’s public transport system. Earlier efforts have already included installing CCTV cameras across buses and depots to enhance passenger safety and prevent theft or misconduct.

Additionally, PMPML is expected to upgrade its control room into a high-tech monitoring centre. This will enable real-time tracking of buses and quicker response during emergencies. The system is inspired by advanced public transport models in cities like Bengaluru, where surveillance technology has improved operational efficiency and safety standards.

Experts believe that dashboard cameras will play a crucial role in identifying the exact cause of accidents, determining responsibility, and providing strong evidence in insurance and legal cases. The move is also expected to instill discipline among drivers and reduce the overall number of road accidents. As Pune continues to expand, such technology-driven interventions are seen as essential to ensure safer and more reliable public transport for daily commuters.
