Pune – April 14, 2026: The city of Pune is witnessing extensive traffic changes today as thousands gather to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Anticipating large processions, public gatherings, and ceremonial visits at key locations, the Pune City Traffic Police issued a detailed advisory late Tuesday night outlining route closures, diversions, no-parking stretches, and restrictions on heavy vehicles across multiple parts of the city. The measures came into force from 11:00 PM on April 13 and will remain active through the end of April 14 to ensure smooth crowd management and public safety.

A 24-hour restriction has been imposed on the entry of heavy vehicles such as containers, multi-axle trucks, and dumpers into city limits. Emergency vehicles including ambulances and fire brigades are exempt. Police officials say this step alone significantly reduces congestion pressure on arterial roads that pass through central Pune and Camp areas, where the highest footfall is expected. Dedicated parking zones have been arranged near the SSPMS Ground close to the RTO and at the Tukaram Shinde parking facility near Pune Railway Station to prevent roadside parking and bottlenecks.

Several major roads around the District Collectorate, Pune Station, Camp (near Arora Tower), Vishrantwadi, Airport Road, central city corridors, and Sinhagad Road are either closed for regular traffic or operating under diversions. Commuters traveling via Shahir Amar Shaikh Chowk, RTO Chowk, GPO Chowk, Narpatgiri Chowk, and Maldhakka Chowk are being rerouted through alternative internal roads such as Jahangir Chowk and Nehru Memorial Chowk. In the Camp area, entry near Camp Street, ISKCON Road, and Nehru Chowk is restricted, while strict no-parking enforcement is underway at Dorabjee, Arora Tower, and Naaz Chowk to avoid choke points.

On the eastern side, traffic from Airport Road toward Vishrantwadi, Bopkhel, and Dighi is being redirected through Holkar Bridge and Khadki routes. Similarly, vehicles approaching Commerzone from the Airport Post Office stretch may face intermittent restrictions depending on crowd movement. In the central city, commuters heading from Puram Chowk toward Shivajinagar are advised to use Tilak Road and Alka Talkies Chowk. Ganesh Road traffic from Lal Mahal Chowk may be periodically halted and diverted through Laxmi Road. Adjustments are also active near Dandekar Bridge and key junctions along Sinhagad Road.

Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti, observed every year on April 14, holds deep social and historical significance across Maharashtra. Pune, being a major urban and cultural hub, witnesses some of the largest gatherings in the state, including rallies, tribute marches, public speeches, and visits to memorial sites. With the city’s vehicle population having increased sharply in recent years, traffic management for such events has become a complex operation requiring coordination between traffic police, local police stations, municipal authorities, and volunteer groups.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) has appealed to citizens to plan their travel in advance, avoid unnecessary trips through central Pune, and cooperate with traffic personnel deployed on the ground. Authorities are also encouraging the use of public transport to reduce the number of private vehicles entering sensitive zones. Early morning and evening hours are expected to witness the heaviest movement due to ceremonial visits and public gatherings.

Commuters are advised to start early, strictly follow diversion signages, avoid parking on main roads, and check live updates from traffic police social handles before stepping out. Those traveling toward Pune Station, Camp, Vishrantwadi, or Sinhagad Road should anticipate delays and use alternate routes wherever possible.

While the diversions may cause temporary inconvenience, officials emphasize that these measures are essential to ensure a safe, respectful, and well-managed celebration of one of India’s most revered leaders. Public cooperation remains the key factor in preventing gridlocks and ensuring that emergency services move without hindrance during the day’s events.
