Insects found in mid-day meal at PCMC Urdu school in Pune; authorities order probe after complaints from students and parents.
Pimpri-Chinchwad, April 20, 2026: A serious lapse in food safety has come to light after insects were allegedly found in the mid-day meal served to students at a Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation-run Urdu medium school in Kharalwadi, triggering outrage among parents and prompting an official inquiry. The incident surfaced around 9:50 am when students noticed insects in the breakfast provided under the government’s school nutrition programme and immediately alerted teachers, following which images of the contaminated food began circulating widely and raised concerns about hygiene standards.
According to civic officials, a formal complaint was received soon after the incident, and the administration has assured strict action if negligence is found. Deputy Commissioner Mamta Shinde confirmed that a detailed investigation has been initiated and accountability will be fixed based on the findings. The issue has also drawn attention from local authorities, with a written complaint submitted to Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi demanding immediate intervention and action against those responsible.

The school, which caters to over 300 students from primary classes, receives meals under the government’s mid-day meal scheme aimed at improving nutrition among children. However, this incident has once again raised serious questions about the quality control and sanitation practices followed in the preparation and distribution of food in civic schools. Parents and local residents have expressed concern over student safety, demanding stricter monitoring and accountability mechanisms.
Officials have indicated that further steps, including possible disciplinary action and review of food suppliers, will be taken after the inquiry report is submitted. Meanwhile, the incident has sparked a broader debate on the need for tighter food safety checks in school meal programmes, ensuring that such lapses do not put children’s health at risk.
The discovery of insects in a school mid-day meal highlights a critical failure in basic hygiene standards. As the probe continues, the focus remains on ensuring accountability and restoring trust in public nutrition schemes meant for children’s welfare.
