Farmer in Mulshi left homeless after house demolition for Pune Ring Road project; questions raised over compensation and due process.

Pune, April 22, 2026: A deeply distressing incident linked to the ambitious Pune Ring Road project has triggered outrage after a farmer in Mulshi was left homeless following a demolition drive. The incident took place in Rihe village, where the house and cattle shed of local farmer Vilas Shinde were demolished by authorities, bringing renewed focus on the human cost of large infrastructure projects.

According to reports, the demolition was carried out in the presence of heavy police deployment as part of land acquisition for the ring road project. The action not only razed the farmer’s residence but also destroyed livestock shelters, leaving the family and their cattle exposed to harsh summer conditions. Eyewitnesses described emotional scenes, with the family watching helplessly as their home was reduced to rubble.

What has intensified the controversy is the claim that compensation for the acquired land has not yet been received by the farmer, as the matter is still pending in court. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, authorities proceeded with the demolition, raising serious questions about administrative sensitivity and adherence to due process. The farmer had reportedly requested a short extension before the action, but the plea was denied.

Further details suggest that the land has been under cultivation by the family for decades, and structures including a house, cattle shed, and poultry units existed on the property. The sudden demolition has not only displaced the family but also disrupted their livelihood, with livestock left without proper shelter and essential resources damaged in the process.

The incident has reignited debate around land acquisition practices in Maharashtra, especially in large-scale infrastructure projects like the Pune Ring Road, which aims to ease traffic congestion and improve regional connectivity. While the project is considered crucial for the city’s long-term urban planning, critics argue that such developments should not come at the cost of basic human rights and rehabilitation of affected families.

Local residents and activists have raised concerns over the lack of immediate rehabilitation measures and transparency in compensation processes. Many are now questioning whether proper legal procedures were followed, especially given that the dispute over the land is reportedly sub judice.

The Mulshi demolition has once again highlighted the delicate balance between development and displacement. As authorities push forward with major infrastructure projects, ensuring fair compensation, humane treatment, and proper rehabilitation for affected citizens remains a critical challenge that cannot be overlooked
