Pune, April 22, 2026: A fresh political confrontation has erupted over the Women’s Reservation Bill as Tejasvi Surya launched a sharp attack on the Indian National Congress, accusing it of being “anti-women” and deliberately obstructing the legislation aimed at increasing women’s representation in politics.

Surya alleged that Congress and other opposition parties have consistently opposed or delayed the implementation of the bill, which seeks to reserve 33% seats for women in Parliament and state assemblies. Calling the development “a betrayal of women,” he claimed that such actions expose the party’s real stance on gender empowerment. His remarks come amid an intensified political debate after the latest attempt to operationalise the reservation framework failed to pass in Parliament.

The controversy stems from the recent failure of the proposed amendment linked to the implementation of the women’s quota, which did not secure the required majority in the Lok Sabha. This has triggered a blame game between the ruling BJP and opposition parties, each accusing the other of derailing the process.

Echoing similar sentiments, several BJP leaders have alleged that the opposition is trying to suppress women’s voices by resisting the bill, while positioning themselves as champions of women’s rights. Surya’s statement adds to this narrative, reinforcing the ruling party’s aggressive stance on the issue.

On the other hand, Congress leaders have strongly rejected these allegations, maintaining that they support women’s reservation but oppose the way the bill is being implemented, particularly its linkage with delimitation and census processes. The party has argued that the government is using procedural conditions to delay actual implementation.

The Women’s Reservation Bill, originally passed in 2023, promises 33% reservation for women but is yet to be fully enforced, as it depends on future census data and constituency delimitation. This gap between passage and implementation has become a major political flashpoint ahead of upcoming elections, with both sides trying to shape public perception.

Political analysts believe the issue has now moved beyond policy and into electoral strategy, with women voters emerging as a key focus group. Statements like Surya’s are seen as part of a broader campaign to frame the opposition as anti-women, while the opposition counters by questioning the government’s intent and execution.
