Pune | May 6, 2026: In a major advancement for weather forecasting and disaster preparedness in Maharashtra, early warnings for sudden cloudbursts, flood-like situations, lightning strikes, and extreme rainfall will now be available at least three hours in advance for Mumbai, Pune, Satara district, and the entire Konkan region.

This improvement has become possible due to the installation of an advanced X-Band Doppler Radar at Mahabaleshwar. The radar was inaugurated on April 30, 2026, in the presence of Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences. Officials said the radar will significantly strengthen real-time monitoring of rainfall patterns and atmospheric activity in the region.

According to experts, the X-Band Doppler Radar operates by transmitting microwave radio waves and analyzing the signals reflected back from rain droplets. By measuring the speed and movement of these droplets, the system can generate highly accurate predictions regarding rainfall intensity, cloud movement, wind speed, storm development, and even hailstorm possibilities.

The radar is expected to provide weather alerts at regular three-hour intervals, allowing authorities and citizens to prepare in advance for dangerous weather events. With Maharashtra witnessing frequent incidents of sudden heavy rainfall and cloudburst-like conditions in recent years, the radar-based forecasting system is expected to play a crucial role in reducing loss of life and property.

Officials also highlighted that the radar will be especially useful for aviation operations between Pune and Mumbai, as it can track storm activity and lightning patterns with improved accuracy. In addition, it is expected to assist farmers by providing precise rainfall forecasts, helping in crop planning, irrigation management, and decision-making during the monsoon season.

The Mahabaleshwar installation is the first X-Band Doppler Radar system in the state, and it is expected to offer dual benefits for Mumbai due to its ability to track weather developments originating in the Western Ghats and moving toward coastal areas.
