India Extends Sugar Export Ban Till September 2026 Amid Rising Domestic Price Concerns

India has prohibited sugar exports till September 2026 to stabilise domestic prices and ensure adequate supply in the local market, while allowing limited exemptions under international quota commitments.

New Delhi | May 14, 2026 The Indian government has imposed an immediate ban on sugar exports till September 30, 2026, in a major move aimed at controlling domestic prices and securing sufficient supplies across the country. The decision was announced through a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) amid concerns over lower sugar production and rising demand in the domestic market.

According to officials, the export restriction has been introduced to prevent any shortage of sugar in the local market and to shield consumers from a possible spike in prices. India, which is among the world’s largest sugar producers and exporters, has been witnessing production pressure due to reduced cane output in several key growing regions. Experts have also linked the concerns to erratic weather conditions and lower crop yields.

The government, however, clarified that certain shipments will remain exempt from the ban. Sugar exports under quota commitments to the European Union and the United States will continue, along with consignments that were already in transit or had completed customs procedures before the notification came into effect.

The move is expected to impact global sugar markets, with international prices already witnessing an upward trend following the announcement. Traders and exporters are likely to face challenges in fulfilling existing overseas contracts as India tightens its supply policy.

Industry analysts believe the export curb reflects the government’s priority to maintain food security and price stability ahead of the festive and high-consumption seasons. The restriction may remain in force until domestic production and stock positions improve significantly.
