Sunetra Pawar, senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, has resigned from the Rajya Sabha shortly after her landslide victory in the Baramati Assembly bypoll
Mumbai | 07 May 2026: According to reports, Sunetra Pawar submitted her resignation to the Vice President of India and Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan, following her election to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in the Baramati bypoll. The move comes just days after she secured a record victory margin of over 2.18 lakh votes, marking a significant political shift in her career from the Upper House of Parliament to state politics.
Her resignation is linked to constitutional requirements that restrict holding simultaneous membership in Parliament and a state legislature. Officials confirmed that her resignation has been accepted, making the Rajya Sabha seat officially vacant.

Within the NCP, attention has now turned to potential successors for the seat. Party insiders indicate that discussions are underway regarding multiple senior leaders who may be considered for nomination. The leadership is expected to weigh political experience, regional representation, and organisational strength before finalising a candidate. Sunetra Pawar’s transition to state politics is being seen as part of a broader strategic realignment within the party, especially after recent political developments and changes in leadership structure. Her elevation in state politics has further strengthened her position within the party hierarchy.

The resignation also comes amid ongoing adjustments within the NCP following leadership changes and internal restructuring. Party leaders have described the move as part of a planned political strategy aimed at strengthening representation at the state level while maintaining balance in the national legislative framework. Political observers note that the vacancy has intensified competition within the party, with several leaders reportedly expressing interest in the Rajya Sabha seat. A formal decision is expected after internal consultations conclude in the coming days.
