Khadakwasla Dam to Release Summer Water Rotation Starting Today to Combat Rising Heat

In response to the intensifying heatwave and surging water demand across Pune district, the Irrigation Department has initiated the summer water rotation from the Khadakwasla dam system to secure drinking water supplies

Pune | May 12, 2026: As soaring temperatures trigger a sharp rise in water consumption, the Pune district administration and the Irrigation Department have officially commenced the summer water rotation from the Khadakwasla dam chain starting Tuesday, May 12. Authorities have emphasized that drinking water remains the “highest priority” in this allocation plan, ensuring a steady supply for both the expanding urban limits of Pune city and the surrounding rural belts.

The decision follows rigorous joint planning between the Irrigation Department and district administration to manage existing reservoirs efficiently until the onset of the monsoon. While the dam levels are currently considered satisfactory, officials are adopting a cautious “drop-by-drop” usage policy to prevent a crisis in the coming months. This strategic release is particularly vital for the Haveli, Daund, and Indapur talukas, which rely heavily on this network for their daily needs.

The move also marks a significant victory for farmers in Indapur. Following intense protests at Sinchan Bhavan by residents of 22 drought-hit villages led by figures such as Bhagwan Khartode, Laxman Hake, and Nilesh Ashtekar the administration has agreed to release water at a discharge rate of 400 cusecs for both agricultural and domestic use. Furthermore, assurances have been given to revoke prohibitory orders under Section 144 in the region. Despite the pressure from the agricultural sector for summer crops, the administration has urged all citizens to use water responsibly and avoid wastage, stating that further rotations will be released in stages based on necessity and storage levels.
