Centre Approves ₹890 Crore Water Infrastructure Boost for Pune’s GBS-Impacted Villages

₹890
The Central Government has sanctioned an ₹890 crore budget to overhaul water supply systems in Pune district villages previously struggling with geographic constraints and Ground Beneath Surface (GBS) issues
Pune| May 13, 2026 : In a decisive step toward rural infrastructure parity, the Union Government has authorized a massive investment of ₹890 crore for a comprehensive water supply initiative in Pune. This project specifically targets several villages that have long grappled with the fallout of being situated in Ground Beneath Surface (GBS) affected zones, where traditional drilling and piping have proven technically challenging.

The sanctioned funds are earmarked for the development of a resilient distribution network, including high-tech pumping stations and treated water reservoirs. This initiative aims to transition these rural clusters from their current dependence on seasonal tankers and erratic groundwater to a reliable, piped supply. The technical blueprint focuses on overcoming the unique topographical and geological hurdles that have historically stalled water projects in these specific regions of the district.

Administrative officials noted that this financial injection would cover both the construction of new assets and the modernization of existing, dilapidated systems. The project is aligned with national goals to provide sustainable potable water to every household, ensuring that the GBS-impacted communities are no longer left behind in the state’s development trajectory. By securing a steady water source, the government expects to see a marked improvement in the local agricultural economy and general public health standards.
Regional representatives have hailed the funding as a “historic correction” for villages that have faced water insecurity for decades. With the budget now approved, the local administration is expected to fast-track the tendering process. This development is seen as a critical lifeline for thousands of residents, promising an end to the perennial water crises that have defined the arid stretches of Pune’s rural landscape during the peak summer months.
