In a massive statewide sweep, the Maharashtra ATS has detained and questioned 57 individuals for alleged links to Pakistani gangster Shahzad Bhatti, conducting high-profile raids across Pune, Mumbai, and Akola.

May 14, 2026 | Pune: The Maharashtra Terrorism Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) launched an extensive crackdown across the state starting early Wednesday morning, targeting individuals suspected of maintaining contact with Pakistan-based gangster Shahzad Bhatti. The operation, which began at 8:00 AM, saw simultaneous raids in strategic locations including Pune city, Shirur, Chakan, and Warje, as well as major hubs like Mumbai, Akola, Nanded, Nashik, and Jalgaon.

Investigations reveal that approximately 57 individuals are currently under the scanner for their digital interactions with Bhatti, who is suspected of using social media platforms to radicalize youth and incite anti-national activities. In Pune district alone, four suspects were detained for questioning after ATS teams swooped down on their residences and workplaces. The authorities are particularly focused on individuals who were active followers or associates of the notorious “Dongar Gang” on various social media networks.

During the raids, officials seized a significant cache of digital evidence, including mobile phones, SIM cards, and electronic storage devices. Forensic experts are now analyzing social media logs and encrypted messaging transcripts to determine the extent of the influence exerted by the overseas handler. Preliminary reports suggest that the suspects were being monitored for several weeks before the tactical teams moved in to prevent any potential security threats.

The ATS has emphasized that this operation is part of a broader strategy to dismantle digital recruitment cells operated by foreign elements. While several people have been taken into custody for interrogation, the agency is meticulously verifying the intent behind their communications. As the investigation progresses, the ATS continues to track the financial and digital footprints of these suspects to uncover any underlying conspiracy aimed at disrupting regional stability. The heightened vigilance across Maharashtra underscores the growing challenge of cross-border cyber-radicalization in the modern era.
