A major Azerbaijani oil and gas company has been hit by a series of sophisticated cyberattacks allegedly carried out by the China-linked hacking group “FamousSparrow,” according to a new cybersecurity investigation. The attacks reportedly targeted critical infrastructure linked to Azerbaijan’s growing role in European energy security.

Cybersecurity researchers revealed that the threat actors repeatedly exploited the same access pathways to regain entry into the company’s systems, highlighting major concerns about persistent vulnerabilities and delayed security patching. Experts warned that attackers are increasingly reusing compromised credentials and previously identified system weaknesses to maintain long-term access inside strategic organisations.

According to the report, the attacks come at a sensitive geopolitical moment as Azerbaijan’s importance in supplying energy to Europe has significantly increased following disruptions in Russian gas transit routes and instability surrounding global oil shipping corridors. Analysts believe this has made regional energy infrastructure a high-value target for foreign espionage groups seeking intelligence and strategic leverage.

Researchers stated that FamousSparrow, previously associated with attacks on governments, telecom firms and hospitality sectors, appears to be expanding its operations into energy infrastructure and industrial systems. The campaign reportedly involved stealthy persistence mechanisms and advanced intrusion techniques designed to avoid detection over long periods.

The incident has renewed global concerns over cyber warfare targeting critical infrastructure. Energy companies worldwide have increasingly become prime targets for nation-state hacking groups due to their economic and strategic importance. Recent years have witnessed multiple cyber incidents affecting electricity grids, fuel pipelines and industrial networks across Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Cybersecurity experts stressed that organisations handling critical infrastructure must prioritise rapid vulnerability patching, credential rotation and continuous network monitoring to prevent repeated intrusions. The report also warned that geopolitical tensions and global energy disruptions are likely to intensify cyber espionage campaigns against strategic energy assets in the coming months.
