Infra Strategist Deepak Singla to Lead Maharashtra Sports Department
Senior IAS officer Deepak Singla has been appointed as Maharashtra’s new Sports Commissioner. The former PMRDA official is known for leading major infrastructure and urban development projects in Pune.
Pune| May 15, 2026:Senior IAS officer Deepak Singla has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Sports and Youth Services, Maharashtra, bringing to the department an officer known for delivering large-scale infrastructure and urban development projects in Pune.
Singla, who was serving as Additional Metropolitan Commissioner at Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), takes charge at a time when Maharashtra is looking to strengthen its sports infrastructure and youth development ecosystem. Before this posting, he had briefly been transferred to the MGNREGA department during the recent administrative reshuffle.

A Chartered Accountant by qualification and a 2012-batch IAS officer, Singla has built a reputation as a result-oriented administrator with expertise in financial management, project execution, and inter-departmental coordination. During his tenure at PMRDA, he was associated with several high-impact urban projects that significantly influenced Pune’s infrastructure growth.
One of the most notable projects linked to his tenure was Pune Metro Line 3, the crucial Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar corridor aimed at improving connectivity between Pune city and the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park. The project required continuous coordination among government agencies, private concessionaires, and civic authorities, and Singla was considered among the key officers monitoring its execution.
Apart from metro development, he also played an important role in PMRDA’s regional planning initiatives, including town planning schemes, road connectivity expansion, and integrated urban mobility projects designed to manage the Pune metropolitan region’s rapid urbanisation. His administrative style has often been described as execution-focused, with strong emphasis on timelines and institutional coordination.
His appointment to the Sports and Youth Services Department is being viewed as a strategic move, especially at a time when states are increasingly competing to build world-class sporting ecosystems and nurture young talent. Officials believe Singla’s experience in handling large infrastructure projects and institutional coordination could help accelerate development of sports facilities and youth programmes across Maharashtra.
Before Singla’s appointment, the post was held by Sheetal Teli-Ugale, who was appointed Sports Commissioner in May last year and has now been transferred as Pune Divisional Commissioner.
