May 16, 2026 | Pune: Highlighting critical urban infrastructure and public safety challenges, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Medha Kulkarni raised urgent demands for pre-monsoon flood mitigation strategies at the Pune District Planning Committee (DPDC) general meeting on Friday. The high-profile review session was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister and Guardian Minister Smt. Sunetra Ajit Pawar, alongside the District Collector, Municipal Commissioner, and senior District Zilla Parishad administrators.
Dr. Kulkarni expressed deep concern over the ongoing Mula-Mutha River Rejuvenation Project, pointing out that active construction debris and continuous riverbed dumping have drastically reduced the water-carrying capacity of the river channels. She cautioned that these structural obstructions present a severe risk of flash floods for adjacent residential complexes. She demanded that the municipal administration immediately release a transparent, comprehensive action plan to ensure that established residential societies and local neighborhoods remain protected from seasonal waterlogging.

Shifting focus to public security following recent safety incidents in Nasrapur, the Member of Parliament strongly advocated for a dedicated budgetary allocation to install comprehensive CCTV networks across schools, bus stands, and commercial hubs. She noted that digital surveillance has proven highly effective in tracking offenders, making it a necessary tool for the protection of women and students. Furthermore, under the institutional ‘Gender Budget’ provisions, she recommended an immediate increase in funding for drinking water facilities and sanitation infrastructure in educational institutes.
Dr. Kulkarni also confronted the administration on widespread land encroachments, urging stringent action against illegal religious structures and unauthorized Waqf Board registrations on government properties. Additionally, she called for enhanced heritage funds to protect UNESCO world heritage sites and historic forts in Pune district, while demanding strict legal penalties against illegal hill-cutting and unauthorized mining activities currently threatening the local Western Ghats ecosystem.
