CJI Surya Kant Sparks Massive Controversy After Comparing Unemployed Youth to Cockroaches and Labeling Activists as Parasites During Supreme Court Hearing

During a heated legal session, the CJI fiercely rebuked a petitioning lawyer, targeting social media commentators, RTI activists, and allegedly fraudulent legal practitioners
May 16, 2026 | New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant ignited a massive national controversy on Friday after comparing certain unemployed youth to “cockroaches” who turn to media, social media, and Right to Information (RTI) activism to attack the institutional system. The highly critical remarks were made during a Supreme Court bench hearing, alongside Justice Joymalya Bagchi, regarding an application filed by an advocate seeking a Senior Advocate designation from the Delhi High Court.
The bench strongly reprimanded the petitioner for aggressively lobbying for the title, stating that the designation is a distinct recognition to be conferred by the judiciary rather than a status symbol to be relentlessly pursued through frivolous litigations. Visibly anguished by the advocate’s repeated filings and his controversial language on Facebook, CJI Surya Kant warned that the top court would set aside any senior designation granted to him due to his unprofessional conduct. “There are already parasites of society who attack the system, and you want to join hands with them?” the CJI remarked.

The scope of the judicial outburst extended sharply to the legal fraternity itself. The Chief Justice voiced deep concerns over a burgeoning number of practitioners operating with forged qualifications in the national capital. He revealed that the apex court is actively contemplating directing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a comprehensive verification of LL.B. degrees held by thousands of advocates wearing black robes. The CJI further criticized the Bar Council of India, asserting that the regulatory body would fail to initiate disciplinary action due to internal electoral collusion and vote bank dependencies.
Following the severe reprimand from the bench, the petitioner advocate offered an unconditional apology and formally requested to withdraw his plea, which the Supreme Court subsequently permitted. However, the CJI’s blistering characterization of activists and unemployed youth has drawn immense traction online, triggering intense debates across political and civic circles regarding the language used by the head of the judiciary.
