India’s national selection committee is set to hold an important meeting in Guwahati on Tuesday to finalize the squads for the upcoming home series against Afghanistan, which includes a one-off Test match and a three-match ODI series next month. The meeting is expected to revolve around two major concerns Rohit Sharma’s fitness and Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management ahead of a packed international calendar.

According to reports, the selectors and team management are likely to take a cautious approach regarding Bumrah’s participation in both formats. With the 2027 ODI World Cup still more than a year away, the Indian think tank is reportedly unwilling to overburden the star fast bowler, especially considering his history of injury setbacks and the increasing demands of multi-format cricket.

Sources close to the development suggest that Bumrah could be rested from either the Test or ODI leg of the Afghanistan series to ensure he remains fresh for bigger assignments later in the year. The management is understood to be prioritizing long-term fitness over short-term scheduling.

Meanwhile, captain Rohit Sharma’s availability is also under close observation. The selectors are expected to assess whether the veteran opener is fully fit to handle the physical demands of ODI cricket, including long batting sessions and extended periods in the field. Only after receiving a positive fitness assessment is Rohit likely to be included in the squad.

The upcoming series is also expected to provide opportunities to several fringe players and younger talents as India continues preparations for future ICC tournaments. Players who performed consistently during the IPL season could find themselves rewarded with national call-ups.

The Afghanistan tour is being viewed as an important step in India’s team-building process, particularly in balancing senior players’ fitness with the emergence of the next generation. The final squads are likely to be announced later in the evening following the conclusion of the selection meeting.
