Sunrisers Hyderabad booked their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs with an impressive five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday. Led by a match-winning knock from Ishan Kishan and a disciplined bowling effort spearheaded by captain Pat Cummins, Hyderabad chased down a competitive target of 181 with one over to spare.
Batting first after losing the toss, Chennai Super Kings posted 180 for seven in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was built on useful contributions from multiple batters, with Dewald Brevis top-scoring with 44 runs off 27 deliveries, while Karthik Sharma added a quickfire 32 from 19 balls. Sanju Samson provided early momentum, attacking aggressively in the powerplay and collecting 17 runs in a single over from Nitish Kumar Reddy. However, Chennai failed to maintain that intensity in the middle overs.
Pat Cummins delivered a crucial spell for Hyderabad, claiming three wickets for 28 runs and preventing Chennai from crossing the 200-run mark. Young pacer Sakib Hussain also chipped in with two wickets at key moments.
Chasing 181, Hyderabad suffered a few early setbacks but regained control through a superb partnership between Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen. Kishan anchored the innings brilliantly with 70 runs off 47 balls, smashing seven boundaries and three sixes. Klaasen complemented him perfectly with a rapid 47 off just 26 deliveries as the duo stitched together a decisive 75-run partnership for the third wicket.
Although Kishan departed in the 19th over, Hyderabad comfortably crossed the finish line at 181 for five in 19 overs. Abhishek Sharma also made an important contribution with 26 runs.

The result not only secured Hyderabad’s playoff berth but also confirmed Gujarat Titans’ qualification. So far, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans have sealed playoff spots, while Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders remain locked in a fierce battle for the final remaining position.
Adding to the discussion surrounding the match was the continued absence of veteran star MS Dhoni, who once again did not feature in Chennai’s playing XI despite attending training sessions before the game.
