Narendra Modi has directed Union ministers to aggressively promote alternative energy sources and fast-track next-generation reforms amid growing concerns over global fuel supply disruptions linked to escalating tensions involving Iran and the broader West Asian region.
During a high-level review meeting with senior ministers and officials, the Prime Minister reportedly emphasised the need to reduce India’s dependence on imported fossil fuels and strengthen long-term energy security. The discussions focused on accelerating investments in renewable energy, green hydrogen, electric mobility and domestic energy infrastructure to shield the Indian economy from external shocks.
The move comes as international crude oil prices continue witnessing volatility due to geopolitical uncertainty in West Asia, raising fears of inflationary pressure and increased import costs for energy-dependent economies like India. Officials believe a sustained rise in oil prices could directly impact transportation, manufacturing, logistics and household expenses across the country.
Sources familiar with the meeting indicated that ministers were also asked to prioritise “next-generation reforms” aimed at improving industrial competitiveness, strengthening domestic manufacturing and enhancing economic resilience. The government is expected to push policy initiatives supporting clean energy transition, advanced technology adoption and infrastructure expansion in the coming months.
India has significantly expanded its renewable energy ambitions in recent years, targeting major growth in solar power, wind energy and green fuel production. Experts say the latest push reflects the government’s strategy to balance economic growth with energy independence amid increasingly uncertain global conditions.

The Prime Minister is also understood to have reviewed preparedness related to fuel supply management and economic contingency planning in case international tensions intensify further. Analysts believe India’s focus on renewable energy and diversification could play a crucial role in reducing long-term exposure to volatile global oil markets.
With geopolitical risks continuing to dominate global economic discussions, the Centre’s renewed focus on clean energy and structural reforms is being viewed as a key step toward safeguarding India’s future economic stability.
