The Maharashtra government has decentralized disaster relief approvals, empowering regional authorities to directly disburse funds for property damage from the state treasury without waiting for state-level clearance

SATARA | May 28, 2026: In a major administrative reform aimed at providing swift assistance to citizens affected by natural calamities, Maharashtra Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Makarand Patil announced a landmark policy shifting fund authorization power directly to regional tiers. The state government has officially sanctioned local administrative authorities to clear and disburse financial compensation for house collapses and structural damage directly through regional treasuries, effectively eliminating standard bureaucratic bottlenecks.

Previously, affected families had to endure prolonged waiting periods while field damage assessment reports (panchnamas) and funding proposals wound through local, district, and eventually state ministry channels for formal clearance. Recognizing the immense economic hardships faced by vulnerable populations during sudden seasonal crises, Minister Patil confirmed that under the new framework for the 2026–27 fiscal year, individual proposals for house damage assistance will no longer need to travel to the Mantralaya in Mumbai for authorization. Local bodies can now directly deploy finances from the treasury using established State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) allocation matrices.

Furthermore, the state has cleared a major backlog, extending this quick-disposal mechanism to pending historical claims. Approved natural disaster compensation cases spanning the years 2023 to 2026 that remain unpaid will be disbursed through authorized fast-track financial letters in the current fiscal timeline.

To maintain transparency, local authorities must complete full on-site verifications confirming that the reported destruction stems directly from authenticated natural disasters before issuing the treasury funds. Additionally, the policy mandates regional administrative desks to systematically upload real-time expenditure data regarding federal SDRF assets into the National Disaster Management digital portal. By anchoring operational control at the grassroots level, the state aims to ensure that distressed citizens receive immediate financial cushions to rebuild their lives following environmental shocks.
