Maharashtra has reported 270 heatstroke cases and 17 deaths between March 1 and May 26 this year, according to data released by the state health department. Out of the reported fatalities, 12 are suspected heatstroke-related deaths, while five have been officially confirmed after medical verification.

Officials stated that the intense summer conditions witnessed across several parts of the state over the past few months have contributed to the rise in heat-related illnesses. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar recorded the highest number of heatstroke cases at 50, followed by Nandurbar with 26 cases, Nashik with 20 and Gadchiroli with 19 cases.

Health authorities have advised citizens to remain cautious during periods of extreme heat and humidity. Doctors have recommended staying hydrated, avoiding direct exposure to sunlight during afternoon hours and wearing light, breathable clothing while travelling outdoors. Medical experts also urged people to seek immediate treatment if symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, dehydration, nausea or persistent fever are noticed.

Officials said elderly citizens, outdoor workers, children and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions remain particularly vulnerable to heat-related complications during the summer season.

Meanwhile, recent rainfall in several districts has brought temporary relief from the soaring temperatures. However, doctors warned that fluctuating weather conditions and increased humidity could now lead to a rise in seasonal infections, including viral fever, flu and water-borne diseases.

The state health department has instructed local administrations and public health centres to remain alert and ensure availability of medical facilities to manage heatstroke and seasonal illness cases effectively.

Authorities have also appealed to citizens to follow weather advisories and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak heat hours as the state transitions towards the monsoon season.
