Two Yerawada Jail Inmates Booked For Assaulting Fellow Prisoner Over Tobacco Demand

A violent clash inside Pune’s Yerawada Central Jail left an inmate injured after two prisoners allegedly assaulted him during an argument over tobacco inside a prison barrack.

A case has been registered against two inmates lodged at Yerawada Central Jail in Pune for allegedly assaulting a fellow prisoner following a dispute over tobacco demand inside the prison premises. The incident reportedly took place early in the morning inside Circle No. 2 barrack of the jail.
According to police officials, the assault occurred around 7 am near the washroom area of the barrack. The victim inmate was allegedly stopped near a water tank by the accused before entering the toilet. During the interaction, the accused reportedly demanded tobacco from him, which led to a heated argument that soon escalated into violence.
Investigators stated that the accused inmates allegedly attacked the victim using a food serving measure and a plastic bucket during the scuffle. The inmate sustained injuries to his head in the assault and was later provided medical attention inside the jail premises.
Prison staff immediately rushed to the spot after noticing the commotion inside the barrack. Officials managed to control the situation and both accused inmates were taken into custody shortly after the incident. Authorities said prompt intervention by prison guards prevented the clash from escalating further inside the jail.
The complaint in the matter was lodged by senior prison officer Revanath Kanade at Yerawada Police Station. Police Sub-Inspector Kundan Satre is currently leading the investigation into the incident.

Officials also noted that similar disputes and clashes among inmates have occurred inside Yerawada Central Jail in the past, often linked to personal rivalries and prohibited substances. Authorities said CCTV cameras installed throughout the prison are being used to monitor inmate activities and assist in the ongoing investigation.
Police are further examining the circumstances surrounding the assault and verifying statements of inmates and prison staff present during the incident.
