Pune Shifts to Green Lanes: MSRTC Saves 11,000 Liters of Diesel Daily with EV Expansion

Amid soaring fuel prices, Pune’s MSRTC division successfully slashes daily diesel consumption by nearly 11,000 liters, deploying 105 electric buses to offer eco-friendly, cost-effective, and noise-free travel for commuters

May 30, 2026 | Pune: In a decisive move to counter the recent surge in petrol, diesel, and CNG prices, the Pune division of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has aggressively optimized its fleet management, yielding a daily saving of 10,981 liters of diesel. This significant fiscal and environmental relief comes on the heels of integrating 105 electric buses into the regional fleet, which now log an impressive 46,232 kilometers on the road every day.

Arun Siya, the Pune Divisional Controller, highlighted that strategic measures have been deployed across all local depots to curb fuel consumption. Depots have been assigned strict efficiency targets, focusing on improving the kilometers-per-ten-liters (KPTL) metric compared to previous years. Furthermore, routes yielding low revenue have been temporarily suspended to prevent resource draining, ensuring that the existing fleet runs at peak financial viability.

Beyond the immediate economic benefit of saving millions in monthly revenue, the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) serves as a major victory against urban pollution. The reduction of 11,000 liters of daily diesel combustion has significantly lowered carbon emissions in the region. Passengers have also warmly embraced the change, noting the superior comfort of noise-free and vibrationless journeys.

Looking ahead, MSRTC plans to scale its EV operations to full capacity. The corporation is currently designing blueprints to introduce these eco-friendly buses to long-distance routes in phases. This expansion aims to bridge rural and urban sectors with high-speed, premium, and sustainable public transit, mitigating the heavy burden of fluctuating fuel prices on the public purse.
