In a bold vision to establish Maharashtra as a global powerhouse for Artificial Intelligence, the state government unveils a massive ₹10,000 crore investment blueprint aimed at generating 1.5 lakh jobs through cutting-edge technology infrastructures

May 30, 2026 | Mumbai: Maharashtra is strategically positioned to anchor the global Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution, leveraging Mumbai’s financial prowess, an advanced tech-talent pool, and a robust startup ecosystem. Speaking at the inauguration of ‘Mumbai Tech Week 2026’ at the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) on Friday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserted that the state is ready to pioneer AI advancements not just within India, but on the international stage.

To turn this vision into reality, the state government has committed a monumental ₹10,000 crore investment to the AI sector, setting a target to create 1.5 lakh job opportunities. To democratize innovation beyond massive corporations, the government is introducing the ‘Compute-as-a-Service’ model and will establish six dedicated Centers of Excellence alongside specialized AI Innovation Zones across the state.

A key highlight of this tech-push is the internal integration of 50 custom-built ‘AI Engines’ across various government departments. Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted ‘Crime OS’, an AI-driven system designed to streamline criminal investigations and judicial processes. A task like filing a 15,000-page chargesheet, which traditionally drained three to four months of manual labor, can now be seamlessly generated within 10 to 12 days using this system. Additionally, the state’s agriculture-focused ‘Maha-Vistar’ app has been recognized by the central government as the nation’s top farmer solution, prompting the development of a national ‘India-Vistar’ counterpart. AI is also being deployed to enhance transparency in construction permits, detect medical insurance fraud, regulate traffic, and optimize disaster management.

Addressing the challenges of this rapid expansion, the Chief Minister raised concerns regarding data privacy and the threat of deepfakes, emphasizing that ‘Ethical AI’ remains the absolute core of the state’s technology policy. Noting that Maharashtra has topped national startup rankings for three consecutive years, Fadnavis invited global entrepreneurs to invest in the state’s expanding ecosystem, backed by government co-investments via a dedicated ‘Fund of Funds.’
