Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has launched Claude Fable 5, a restricted public version of its highly advanced Claude Mythos 5 model, bringing some of its most powerful AI capabilities to a broader audience for the first time. The move comes after months of limited access during which the technology was made available only to a select group of organizations due to concerns over its potential cybersecurity applications.

According to Anthropic, Fable 5 represents the company’s most capable AI model released for general use. The system is designed to excel in software engineering, scientific research, knowledge work, visual reasoning, and complex long-duration tasks. Company officials say the model significantly outperforms previous Claude versions, particularly when handling sophisticated workflows that require sustained reasoning and planning.

Despite its advanced capabilities, Anthropic has embedded extensive safety mechanisms into the model. Queries related to high-risk areas, including cybersecurity and biological research, are automatically redirected to a less powerful model, Claude Opus 4.8. The company says these safeguards were extensively tested through adversarial evaluations and jailbreak attempts before the public rollout.

Alongside Fable 5, Anthropic also introduced Claude Mythos 5, a less restricted version that remains available only to trusted cybersecurity professionals, government partners, and selected organizations through its Project Glasswing initiative. The company plans to gradually expand access under a controlled trusted-access programme.

The launch highlights the growing challenge facing AI developers: balancing the benefits of increasingly powerful models with the need to prevent misuse. As competition intensifies among leading AI firms, Anthropic’s guarded release strategy may serve as a blueprint for future deployments of frontier AI systems.
